How not to get published

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!Jane Austen would have trouble finding a publisher today, says Reuters, completely missing the fact that, actually, she has plenty of publishers, as her books have probably never been more easily available than they are today.
But you can see […]

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Supermarkets

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

What a shame. As a 10-year publishing phenomenon reaches its climax it’s been turned into nothing more than a supermarket price war.
This morning, or just after midnight last night to be accurate, the final volume in the seven-book Harry Potter saga went on sale, and his journey came to what Rowling called a pretty clear […]

Flat veg

Friday, July 20th, 2007

No sooner have the broccoli plants started to show some promise, than we have a storm so spectacular the papers are calling it a monsoon. You can see why. Torrential rain that overloaded all the gutters, in which two months’ supply fell in nine hours.
The outcome was as predictable as it was unwelcome. The tallest […]

Facebook and the Oxford students

Friday, July 20th, 2007

I don’t know how this happened, especially as my privacy settings were such that only my friends and students in my networks could view my photos… It’s quite unbelievable and I am very pissed off…
What I find quite unbelievable is the naivety of the person who made this comment, as quoted in The Guardian. Not […]

Jane Austen would have trouble finding a publisher today, says Reuters, completely missing the fact that, actually, she has plenty of publishers, as her books have probably never been more easily available than they are today.
But you can see their logic. Struggling writer David Lassman sent copies of several Austen chapters to 18 different publishers, […]

Broccoli!

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Silly to get excited, I know, but I was weeding and watering the garden last night and spotted the first broccoli floret was already forming in the tallest of the broccoli plants (where else).
It’s clearly getting ready to take over from the beans when they’ve finally exhausted themselves.

My part in the BBC’s downfall (sorry)

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

It seems the BBC’s competitions and editing debacle is either more extensive or more embarrassing than we thought, as Director General Mark Thompson has suspended all competitions on its broadcast services - both radio and TV.
I suppose it’s too much to hope this includes the Lottery.
Regardless of the true extent of the irregularities, which are […]

Honesty, truth and the BBC

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

‘BBC faces fresh deception rows,’ says the Guardian. How shocking. What’s been going on? Has Huw Edwards been fibbing on the ten o’clock news? Has Watchdog been scare-mongering? Has Crimewatch been making up photo-fit pictures of imaginary criminals.
Nope - none of those.
It turns out someone may (or may not) have edited some Flog It! footage […]
