Well, what an exciting year it is for Eurosong fans. First was the next this year’s Eurovision Song Contest might not happen at all after Latvia went over its sums again and realised it was far short of the funds to stage the event, then the revelation that from next year it’s likely to be a two-day event as the countries of northern Africa join in and a knock-out round is introduced.
Then this morning Metro reports on disruption in the Belgian camp:
Belgium: A singer with the country’s Eurovision Song Contest band has been dropped over claims she is a neo-Nazi sympathiser. Soetkin Collier, the 25-year-old lead singer of Urban Trad, was sacked after it emerged she had been watched by the state security service and twice detailed at events organised by far-Right supporters. Collier said: ‘I have always had a horror for things to do with fascism, racism and neo-Nazism.’ The group is looking for a new singer for May’s event.
Belgium hasn’t won Eurovision since 1986.
Perhaps 2003 isn’t their year either.
