When the Irish ratified the Nice Treaty last month, by a narrow majority, and simultaneously approved the application of ten countries to join the Union it was the end of a long battle over what the net effect would be on its existing members.
Naturally, some in Ireland were worried that the generous subsidies it has been receiving from the central government, would be cut and diverted. Poland then made itself look rather foolish when it held up negotiations by demanding a better deal for its farmers.
The International Herald Tribune throws light precisely what the balance of payment will be, and it’s obvious why Poland wasn’t entirely happy with the proposals.
