Sat up writing until the early hours of the morning, drinking tea until I had finished the whole first draft of the book. Paul and I had been talking about going away this weekend, although I’d got my weeks all mixed up and thought we were talking about some weekend or other later in August. That was what eventually spurred the marathon writing session, and this morning I woke up with earache, feeling all washed out and drifty. The train ride was a bit of a haze, so I got nowhere with my proofing, but I’m not so worried about that now I’ve got the main bulk of it down on paper.

Had a morning full of meetings about the awards ceremony. Finalised the designs for the heavy glass awards we’ll be giving out to the winners, and then had another meeting discussing the nominees and winners. Ten of the 14 are decided. The other four are set through reader votes, and we don’t get them until 20th August, so we have a bit of breathing space.

Went for a brief drink with Leo, Jason and Mark after work, but was out by 7 and met Chris on the train. Found it very difficult to do anything book related when I got home, so ended up doing none of it. My cable modem has gone AWOL, too, so resorted to dialling in with a crawling modem through the Linux box. The Konqueror really is far superior to Netscape, which feels so mid-90s. It has a tendency to ask you about every cookie on every page by default, though, which soon makes you realise just how many you pick up on an average page trawl. The French railways site at sncf.com is one of the worst offenders. I also can’t get it to tell me the time of trains from Avignon to Madrid at the end of September. Thought it might make a fun thing to do, as it’s unlikely we’re going to get to Canada this year.

Still somewhat baffled as to how I connect the Linux box to my parallel Zip drive…
