‘Quite simply it’s perfect…’ it says on the cover.

All I could add are the words ‘in every possible way’.

After months of watching the price of the DVD drop on every trip to HMV, I finally bought Amelie today in the sale, and watched whatever mystery the slim green case contained. It exceeded all of my expectations. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted and full of humour it’s the kind of film that leaves you with a happy lump in your throat.

I hope that one day I’ll be able to write something quite so extraordinary.

So, that was the end of the day. The rest of it was not nearly so perfect. I didn’t get to bed until well into the early morning after last night’s slot on Through the Night and then the drive across town, and was woken a couple of hours later by the kind of thunderstorm that would announce the arrival of the horsemen of the apocalypse.

All four of them at once.

Of course when they failed to show I pulled the duvet over my head and eventually fell asleep again, but that, combined with an early alarm and a hellish drive across town to the station (three miles in 45 minutes, as is always the way when I’m cat-sitting) left me with heavy eyelids when I got to my desk.

It doesn’t help that over the weekend the scaffolding men wrapped the building in a fine blue mesh, which gives the whole place a wintery feel, despite the heat.

Fortunately most of the day was spent in the lab, as pretty much the whole of the week will be while I test a dozen nigh-on identical bits of kit. It’s cooler down there and even if I’d wanted to look out I wouldn’t have been able to thanks to the frosted windows.

I was helped considerably by the tardy arrival of my iPod after a diversion by way of my flat in the tail end of last week. It’s so cute, and like a stray little kitten it soon had the whole office cooing over it.

So shiny. So slim. So pretty.

Perfection twice in one day.

One Response to “Amelie”

Krist says:

Oh, I love Amelie, such a wonderful, wonderful story. Have you also seen The City of the lost Children and Delicatessen by the same directors? Great attention paid to every last little detail.
