And my head went bang

Half an hour before doing last night’s piece on Through the Night, I started to lose my sight. I thought at first that I’d looked at a lightbulb or something and got one of those funny marks that stays in your eyes for a while, but by the time the ISDN started chirruping away with Mandy’s cheery voice on the other end I couldn’t see anything through my right eye and I was starting to feel sick.

It’s years since I’ve had a migrane; probably only had two or three in my life, but this one was a biggie. I stumbled through the piece, most of it from memory as I could barely see my screen any more, and then crawled into bed to hide under the duvet. It felt like someone was dropping bricks on my head and after an hour of turning over and over it was obvious I wasn’t going to get any sleep laying there.

So, I moved into the lounge and sat in the dark in the lounge, where the dim light from the clock on the radio was bright enough to sting my closed eyes and make my head throb. Eventually, some time after one, I fell asleep, and woke up several hours later soaked in sweat. I don’t know what was going on last night, but I certainly wasn’t happy inside.

Feeling a bit better, I returned to my bed and slept right through until morning. After that, I was secretly quite glad that the trains had been hobbled by broken signals further down the line, which let me stay home for a while and write my column in peace and quiet.

I’ve kind of had the dregs of the head all day, and didn’t do too well on swimming in a straight line at the gym this evening. I had a tendency to swim into the lane ropes for some reason, which made me look like a bit of a spazz, so I got out and sat in the sauna instead, hoping it would evaporate the pool water from my ears.

It didn’t.

Sitting here, the sound of water running around in my left ear, it strikes me that I actually live in a right-ear flat. Kind of like having a right-hander’s kitchen where the draining board is on the left of the sink and the cutlery draw is to the right. As I sit typing, the radio is to my right. When I do the washing up, the radio is in the lounge, again to the right. When I watch TV or a DVD, the seat I sit in puts the TV to my right.

I wonder if it’s mere coincidence, or something in my subconscious made my arrange things that way.
