March went out on a high. Orange was launching its new online music service (download a track and then remix it on your mobile) so was throwing a party over at Koko in Camden. Well, Mornington Crescent, actually, but it’s a place with pretensions.
I met Kathryn and Emilie Ems at Tottenham Court Road, and we went up on the tube. Things had kicked off at five, apparently, so by arriving at half six we had pretty much missed the finger nibbles. That’s not always a bad thing: they are usually dripping in fat and low in useful food content, but with friendly softies buying drinks from all directions I could really have done with something in there to mop things up. It didn’t take long to start tripping on the stairs.

Bumped into Gordon (almost literally) as we perched ourselves up on the second floor balcony so we could watch Athlete play their set. It’s a great venue for watching live bands. Steeply banked, it rises up about five or six floors, with the stage and bottom floor sunk under the ground. The floors are all balconies, really, and they wrap tightly around the centre, giving everyone a great view.

As we leaned over the ledges we took silly pictures of each other until I managed to drop the camera off the railings. It slipped out of my fingers, bounced off the concrete edge of the balcony and tumbled down to the floor below. I was sure it must have broken - especially as the lens was out because it was switched on and the lens was out, but Kathryn ran down to pick it up before anyone managed to stand on it, and apart from a dent on one end it was fine.

I knew nothing about Athlete, beyond the name, and even that I kept on getting wrong (I was sure they were called Aqualung, which apparently is someone different altogether). It was a great night, though, and as I stumbled home on the train with Gordon it felt like a good ending to a good first quarter of what is so far turning out to be a rather nice year.
