It was unbelievably difficult getting out of bed this morning, and when I eventually managed it and looked out of the window it was dark and icy. The River Chelmer has been frozen over for two days now. So has the lake in Central Park. Everything was pretty - or at least it would have been if I could see it properly.

I went to the gym and ran 3.5km, but only after 10 minutes spent scraping ice from the car windows. It was really unpleasant. My fingers were frozen. I turned the shower up nice and hot, though, and left feeling much better.

Then the trains delayed me. I knew it was foolish to hope for a journey as good as yesterday. My train was delayed at Colchester, then congested outside London, then we had to sit around waiting for a platform. I was ten minutes late arriving. Not a good way to start the New Year.

The few Christmas cards that had arrived in the last days of last year were waiting to be opened when I got in, and it was good to see the team again. Jason, Mark and I went to Soup Works for lunch and bought far-too-spicy lentil soup that made our lips feel red raw.

Once I’d finished, and cooled my mouth down with a banana I got settled into writing my column, which got very exciting towards the end of the afternoon. I called the FBI for a quote and got put on hold while they found the most appropriate person to tell me they were not prepared to comment on technologies at this time. I asked another question and they gave the same reply. I guess they’re rather practiced at deflecting irritating journalists.

Read proofs on the train home then came back and did a bit more work, huddled next to the radiator with an endless stream of mugs of steaming tea. Winter has well and truly arrived.
