Gym-ed, then straight to work (train so full I couldn’t fully open my Guardian) to find some of the spreadsheets I really needed to use strangely missing off the server. Half way through the morning, the production team was complaining about missing and corrupted filed over there, too, at which point Systems were brought in to investigate.
It seems the server got fed up and decided to mutilate one of its drives on Friday. God bless backups. After some scrabbling around on (I assume) tapes and hard drives, it was all pretty much back to how it should have been within the hour, but it was a bit worrying for a while.
Got an updated book contract through, which I’ll have to read through. I hate legalese. So cautious and contrived. I brought up my concerns about the who-is-liable-for-errors clause and the fact that the woman from Penguin thought it was rather strange so publisher Joyce said to jot it down in an email and we’d discuss it.
She also checked I was OK to deliver the copy by 15th August, which is only two weeks away. Stayed back after work to hit the keyboard for a couple of hours and got the first six pages drafted. No screen shots yet - they’ll take some time.
David was in. He found the rather worrying cutoffmyfeet.com. Mailed it over to Will at PC Advisor. Neither of us can quite decide whether it’s real or not. It’s about this guy who is going to cut his feet off live online on 19th September. His legs were badly damaged in a crash a couple of years ago but his doctors wouldn’t amputate and give him prosthetic limbs, so he’s stuck hobbling around on damaged legs. His rather painful logic is that by cutting them off he’ll be eligible for pneumatic replacements, and by charging 200,000 viewers $19.99 he’ll be… rich.
And bleeding.
