Broadsheets and bedsheets

My fears about turning middle aged at the age of 28 manifested themselves again this morning when I spent the first part of the day under the bedsheets with the broadsheets and a cup of tea. I worked my way slowly through the travel, Saturday and Editor sections of The Guardian and it was still only mid-morning. I’ll be buying slippers and travel rugs and drinking coffee from a flask next.
One good thing that’s come out of it all is that it’s making me think more seriously about this whole book-writing business. Since not getting the editorship I’m feeling a bit stuck in the middle of things, so I need to plan out what happens in the future.
A surprising side effect of not getting it is the renewed interest of recruitment agencies. Two calls asking if I’m interested in going to interviews for equivalent jobs in the last week alone. Very strange. And I thought nobody in media was hiring anyone at the moment.
I had a late breakfast, so skipped lunch and settled down to finally getting the scripts I was working on yesterday sorted out. I think I probably solved the problems earlier than I thought but for some reason my browser was loading everything out of a cache so I never saw them update, no matter how often I forced it. I ended up logging into Demon on my laptop instead and everything worked fine, so it’s either IE6, Windows XP or Telewest that’s at fault. I know which I suspect.
Met up with Trevor and Jon for tea and cake around at Paul’s. It was one of those afternoons where you don’t talk about anything in particular, or even do anything more than flop around on the furniture, yet it flew by. We’d barely finished the first mugs when we noticed we’d been a couple of hours.
They all migrated upstairs to look at the snaps from their trip to Madrid, while I vegged out in front of Ant and Dec doing the rundown for Record of the Year. Lots of crap to vote for. Another sign of premature middle age.
