If I thought the busy week was going to end at six on Friday I was mistaken. To be honest, I had an inkling I would have to work most of the weekend, but I had no idea how hard.
So, rewinding the clock… Saturday morning I went around to Mark’s. Ja was still in bed when I arrived so we sat in the shade in the garden and chatted about things. Work and jobs and London, mainly. We both have a dislike of London, only while he works from home writing amusing drama I end up travelling into the city every day on the train.
I had only popped around to borrow a CD with a track I need for Thursday’s programme, but Ja appeared from beneath the duvet, and we got chatting some more and before I knew it I was staying for lunch.
I didn’t leave until half three, so by the time I’d made a cup of tea and got myself settled in front of the PC it was four.
I’d planned on doing four hours, then heading around to Paul’s, where we’d arranged to watch a film and munch pizza with Trevor and Jon. Paul called me from Sainsbury’s. He was having a food crisis. I was having a software crisis, and explained that I couldn’t see myself making it around for the film.
Just as well, too. I got the software crisis fixed just after nine, and in an effort to make up lost time worked straight through until 1am, Sunday morning, then collapsed into bed.
I had some very bizarre nightmares. Rabbits biting my fingers, mainly, and when I tried to detach the most vicious of them, which had clamped its jaws firmly around my middle finger and its feet around my thumb, it creaked and I woke up in a cold sweat.
It was half seven, Sunday morning. I knew immediately that I wasn’t going to get any more sleep, so got up and switched on the PC.
Everything was a bit clearer after some sleep, and things went pretty smoothly. By three, I’d finished testing the software and started writing the review. By five the review was finished and my legs were stiff and aching, so I called Paul to see if he was busy or fancied a wander down to the river. Fortunately he fancied the river, as it had been blazing sunshine all day and I was sick of being stuck indoors.
It was great to be out. I felt incredibly happy to have finished the review, and even though I knew I had some more software to test today I put it out of my mind and enjoyed the sun. I even found a four leaf clover, completely by chance, and without even looking. Something bit me in the long grass as I was trying to avoid some spiders, but whatever it was I was so relaxed I couldn’t have cared less.
We went back to Paul’s for some food and flopped around in front of the telly. The BBC was showing Blackadder Back and Forth, which we saw when we went to the Dome a couple of years ago. It’s still funny, but I remember it being longer.
I wandered home not long after that, and had an early night, but still felt exhausted when I woke up this morning, fortunately without the help of vicious nightmare bunnies.
I re-read yesterday’s review and it was surprisingly cohesive considering how long I’d been testing by the time I got around to writing it. I did a bit of redrafting, then emailed it into the office, feeling smug that I was working from home.
The rest of today pretty much followed the same course as yesterday, without the walk, spiders or four leaf clover. I spent most of it testing, and did a bit of writing, and generally got up to date on the jobs that needed doing so that when I go into the office tomorrow I immediately get on with editing the next group test.
Dinner with Paul this evening. Pasta and The Forstye Saga. An unlikely combination.
