Purr purr purr. I’m cat sitting right now, and as I semi-lay, semi-sit in bed typing this she’s tucked up beside me, her feet and legs folded beneath her undercarriage like she’s a little hairy turkey trussed up for Christmas.
The poor thing has been very clingy this evening. When I came home I couldn’t find her anywhere, and it took a good ten minutes of hunting before I found her under one of the desks upstairs, squashed into a corner where she was hiding, quite unsuccessfully, from the cacophony of fireworks going on all around the hill.
There are good and bad things about living up here for a few days, looking after her. The major plus point is the food, as mum stocks the fridge to bursting with Tesco finest stuff, so tonight it was pumpkin and butternut roast with wine sauce and parmesan winter vegetables. Tomorrow, mushroom, leek and gruyere filo parcels with brie-topped potatoes. And there’s stilton. By the time I go home on Saturday night I’ll be rolling around like a Baby Belle.
Less good is the travelling to and from the station. The hill seems to be more of less cut off at the moment, and this morning it took me over an hour to get from the front door here to a seat on a train. It’s a journey of less than three miles. It really does drive you mad sitting in the car going nowhere, looking at all the expensive houses by the edge of the road. At least I got to listen to almost the whole of In Our Time, though, which today was about asteroids and comets.
All in all, then, the cat hasn’t seen a great amount of me. The first night I was here - Tuesday - I ended up working until 22h, and was barely here before midnight. ‘Where the hell have you been,’ was written right across her furious pussycat glare, before she did a little catty belch, stretched her neck forward and vomited on the carpet.
‘There,’ she said, stalking off into the lounge. ‘Clear that up.’
But I know by Sunday I’ll be missing her.
