Mark was around for dinner last night, so we flopped around in front of a pizza and Calendar Girls. I still think that film comes very close to losing it at the point they go to America, and I’m not even sure that happened in real life, but it does just about manage to pull it back again before the end, so it’s off the hook.
Flicking through the channels when it was over, we stopped for a while on BEN, which really does have to be seen to be believed. A lot of it seems to be played off a video tape, complete with vaseline-on-the-lens softness, terrible sound that is at times LOUD and other times inaudible, except for the hum of a poorly earthed mic, and colours that cycle through the whole spectrum, like the lights on a set of seaside dodgems.
It didn’t keep us nearly as long, as TVE, which was showing the semi-finals for the Spanish entry in this year’s Eurovision. Of course, none of us speaking much Spanish we didn’t realise it wasn’t the final, so after sitting through the songs, trying to decode all the faff about voting and then staring at the steadily degrading picture until 01h30 we were somewhat disappointed to see it stagger to a close with the phone numbers still scrolling across the screen.
It was full of the usual mix of semi-credible acts and the odd bit of novelty rubbish - a bit like a British bi-election - but I still haven’t heard anything I like as much as this year’s Slovenian entry. I wouldn’t put my neck on the line and predict it’ll win, in spite of doing that with the Ukraine last year and getting it right (should have placed a bet) but I’d slip it into the top 5…
