Since when did libraries get so noisy? I walked into Chelmsford today to look up some bits and bobs for the backstory of the book, took my iBook along with me and planned on spending the afternoon patching up the gaps in my outline.

It started well, but then in came these obnoxious girls with mobile phones. They tested all their ring tones, made extremely loud phone calls to their friends in the outside world and spent much of their time sitting cross-legged on top of the tables listening to music through highly leaky headphones.

One of them kept on pointing at the little glowing apple on the lid of my iBook saying it was the coolest thing evah (second only to her pink Razr phone, which she was going to take back to the ‘bitch’ in the shop and demand her money back) and saying she was going to go out and get one.

That was about the most intelligent thing they said in the whole hour they sat there going on about how fahkin’ bored they fahkin’ were.

And then when they left (finally) it was the turn of the DSS scroungers on the table behind me who unpacked a whole picnic and sat there eating while they gossiped about a forthcoming trip to Thailand.

In the end I resorted to taking photos of the pages I was trying to read and then bringing them home so I could sit in the warmth with unlimited streams of tea and beautiful, perfect silence.

Nasty place.
