Dinner

Oscar’s last day. Sal came and picked him up at lunchtime and I’ve spent the rest of the day expecting to see him peeping around a corner every time I walk into a room. I was clearing up the end of the litter he had sprayed all over the floor thinking that I really ought to make an effort to meet up with Mark and Ja, who I’ve not seen since we did our mystery tour in the summer from Harwich to Walton to St Osyth.

An hour later, the phone rang. It was Mark calling to see if I’d be free for a cup of tea after they’d seen Lord of the Rings. They said they’d arrive at eight, so I suggested they stayed for some dinner instead.

I hoovered the cat hair out of the furniture then went to Sainsbury’s to buy the bits I needed for a chilli and found it almost deserted. Practically the only people there were the staff in little orange tops sticking reduced prices on all the food, so I bought oranges (20 a bag), malt loaf (down to 40p), ditto pancakes (30p), tomato (12 for the price of 6), tuna (6 for the price of 4), garlic bread (3 for the price of 2)… mainly stuff that will freeze.

I went to the front of the checkout queue but she girl adding it all up (spots and a brace) bad to type in all the prices so it took ages to get through. I looked either poor or stingy. I’m not sure which.

Paul arrived just before eight, with Mark and Ja five minutes behind and dinner ten minutes after that. A very nice evening. We had plenty to catch up on, but disolved into a slouching mess in front of the telly after we’d eaten. Very naughty. We should have left it switched off. In our defence, we did talk about everything that was on, so it’s not like we just sat there and stared.

We jumped around the cable channels until ITV2 started showing a cringeworthy fly-on-the-wall thing about the gay guys in Danbury who had paid a woman in America to have twins for them. They didn’t come across at all well and we switched over half way through to watch the Eurotrash awards for sexual achievement.

I’m sure Christmas TV used to be better than this.
