I did my usual thing of getting up half an hour before the breakfast show trail and sat around like a vegetable until the phone rang at 7.20. I really must discipline myself to get up and wake up. I did record it this week and was pleasantly surprised that I sounded quite lively considering how I felt, and even more so considering I was talking about virtual allotments. Simon Bates is away on holiday, so it was David Banks presenting.
The whole of the morning was spent deleting irrelevant email and reading the bits that mattered, and waiting for lunch, which seemed so far away.
It’s press week this week, so it’s a deadline minefield at the moment. Every time I turned my back Laura sneaked round and left another pile of proofs on my desk, all of which had to go off to repro ‘tomorrow’. Still, it was the reviews section, which is always an interesting read, and the columns, which I enjoy.
Half four came soon enough, so I was able to stuff what remained in my bag and scoot off to ITN where everyone was happy because the listening figures are up to over half a million. Wrote a load of questions with Gordon for my trip to LINX tomorrow while we had dinner, although I suspect the woman I’m meeting will be a bit touch about answering most of them as they do rather dwell on the security of the building and what would happen if it was bombed.
It wasn’t a bad show. Roger came in for the first hour or so on his way to the chip shop opposite Holborn police station. He has a very dry sense of humour so he’s always fun to have on. We munched through most of my box of Adobe chocolates. Steve and I finished them on the train home while I tried to pick up my voicemail and got a rude message from Virgin Mobile asking me to call them to discuss ‘reconnection’. It seems I’ve been blocked to incoming as well as outgoing calls. They’d left another message on my answerphone at home, but after hanging on for an hour and 35 minutes without speaking to anyone I gave up on the support line. Another Direct Debit cock-up, no doubt.
An email from the LINX woman saying there was a problem with tomorrow, but not enough details to be of any use. I’ll call her in the morning.
