Dressing up
Now normally you couldn’t pay me to go to Hamleys but the grey weather was getting us all down. Anyhow, that’s how I ended up there at lunchtime with Kathryn and Emilie, reliving a childhood I thought had left me more than a decade ago.
To be honest, I’m surprised we didn’t get thrown out for dressing up in all the stupid hats and costumes on the third floor, particularly when Emilie came flying around the corner in full owl-regalia, complete with feathered face mask.
I think the staff were distracted by the truly awful Karaoke stand by the escalators, which some visiting Koreans clearly thought had been laid on for their benefit. They took up the challenge with gusto and stood wailing (badly) to an astonished, rather reserved British audience that pretended not to be interested.
Toys have changed a lot over the years. I’m not sure how wise it is to put the Hanibal Lecter mouth-guards and Barbie dolls on the same floor, though.
Where the time went, I don’t know, but next time we checked it was two already and we ran back to the office. The rest of the day didn’t seem half as grim. We had another Susie-cheese feast before leaving then I met Kevin at the gym.
We bumped into each other there on his first ever visit back in August and said we should arrange to go together some time but never made it, so when he texted me and suggested this evening I agreed.
He said he’d actually been hoping I’d not want to go as he wasn’t in the mood, but we had a good workout and took the opportunity of looking stupid together to try out the big blue balls you’re supposed to use for sit-ups. I normally chicken out and use the mats instead and still don’t think I got them quite right this time around, but for a first effort they certainly felt like they were doing some good, so I’ll persevere.
We both left feeling pretty springy and made tentative arrangements to repeat it same time next week.
Came home to watch trash TV, and revised my notes for tomorrow’s show.
