This morning’s breakfast show featurette was one of the best in a long while. I don’t know why - it just felt good. I switched off the ISDN at the end of it and went into work with a smile. Hopefully it came across well, too, but it’s so often difficult to tell. I do think, though, that if you feel happy with what you’ve done, worked through some genuinely useful and interesting information, and not messed around with in-jokes then generally how you feel at the end of it is a good indicator of how it worked on air. One day, I’ll record it and play it back so I can see for sure. Until then, though, I’ll go with my instincts.
I spent much of the morning shifting boxes out of the postroom and back into the lab. A lot of kit was back from the photographers and clogging up the loading bay. It’s not a job I like. Everything is shuttered off and the light is all artificial down there. There’s little enough sun as it is at this time of year. The way it rises in the morning around now, and again in the spring, it creeps up between the old police college across the road, and the office building beside it, and obliterates whatever is on my screen. I have to pull down my blind until almost lunch when it is high enough to be bothering desks on the floors above.
Much of the day’s gossip centred around Ulrika Johnsson and the not-to-be-named accused. No matter how much you try and avoid showbiz stories there is always a big one now and then that grips every office. Every time someone found something new on one of the news sites we all pointed our browsers in that direction.
It was almost a relief to leave at half four and head over to LBC. The show was fun, and went well. Roger came in to do the news in the first half hour. It’s a while since we’ve seen him, so it was good to have him back. Had plenty of emails and calls - some quite discursive rather than just question and answer - and the new listening figures had come out, too, showing a large jump for LBC. So, all in all, a good evening, topping off a fairly fun day.
