I’ve not been in work as early as I was today for weeks. Months, in fact. Perhaps a year now I think about it. 8.20. Not that early by London standards, but the crack of dawn for a writer. Especially one who works in magazines.
The tube was crowded, of course, but it wasn’t such a bad journey, and I was second to arrive. By the time we were all assembled, ready for our rediculously early, rediculously long but actually very useful day long meeting we all looked as though we could have done with another couple of hours in bed.
Bits of the day crawled. Other parts flew by, and I didn’t really notice the lack of breaks until we got to the end, and we all streamed out of the room and out to the pub, when a wave of tiredness swept over me. It felt very good to collapse onto a barstool in the Green Man with Emilie, Kathryn, Mark and a drink.
Somehow someone had liberated one of the stick-note blocks from the meeting room with the rest of their papers and pens, so we wrote the names of famous people on them and stuck them to each others’ foreheads. So, sitting there with big pink labels covering half our faces we spent the next half hour asking yes/no questions until we could each guess the name on our heads. A south African guy from the Marks & Spencer leaving do on the next three tables came across at one point to see what was going on, so we stuck Michael Barrymore on his head and he joined in.
The quick drink turned into a three hour slouch, several rounds of guess the celebrity and an extended origami demo as we each tried to outdo one another. South African guy made an ornate but rather flammable ash tray good for only one smoke. The rest of us made ducks with varying degrees of success.
Mine looked like a camel.
