Well, they finally made Riyad’s resignation official today, and I don’t think it will have come as too much of a surprise to anyone. Within minutes we were getting emails about it. I guess it’s kind of understandable that an industry full of journalists should be the one in which news travels fastest. I started to fill out an internal application form, but it’s being advertised externally, too, so we’ll see. Mark gave me a huge cheer-up hug. He can be very sweet.
In the four years I’ve been at PCW, I’ve had four different editors. It’s certainly a turbulent position, but no more so than any other on a magazine. People I speak to can’t believe I’ve been there as long as I have. The average length of time on a magazine is somewhere between one and two years.
I really must get on with writing my book. Not the fact one - that’s done - well, almost. I still have to do half the screen shots and it’s due at the publisher’s in six days - the fiction one that I’ve been meaning to write since I started. There’s always been an excuse to put it off, though. First it was that I was finding my feet as a writer (although it was probably more to do with the fact that I was just having too much fun), and now it’s that I’m too busy. Always too busy. Up at half six, working until half nine or ten at night, and on the train in and out every day. It’s not surprising I’m stalled at 70,000 words of disorganised and rather random episodes that need linking together.
One day. Soon.
Mid-morning Microsoft meet, again. I’ve been seeing them a lot lately. Windows XP this time - a full run-down and demo, and a couple of copies each to take away, which I’m not quite brave enough to put on my main PC. Perhaps the Linux box will have to be sacrificed in the name of research, but I’m loath to do that as I’ve only just got it up and running and I’m still trying to work out how to get my Zip drive talking to the OS.
We could really do with a thunder storm tonight.
No phone call from LBC Tim so I assume there is no breakfast show trail tomorrow. I hope not, or I’ll probably be woken by the phone. I should use the opportunity to go to the gym, but I’m so worn out at the moment I think I could do with the sleep instead.
