Good intentions

I woke up early, full of energy and good intentions and promised myself I’d get to the office well before anyone else so I could work on the new outline for the book. I’d finished in the gym by 7.30 and all was looking well. Tea and teacake bought, I sat at my desk and… fiddled. For almost an hour, answering emails and thinking about guests for Thursday’s show.

I did get down to some planning eventually, and pretty much got it done, but I’m starting to think it would have been quicker to just write the damned book from the off and then work on the plan afterwards. At least then I’d have something on paper that could just be tweaked. This is the fifth time I’ve written out the plan now and still there’s no body copy to look at.

The morning passed without incident, and I spent lunchtime in Golden Square with the shirtless media types, reading about Japan’s annexation of Korea during the Second World War, which reminded me to go and find some ‘business casual’ pocketed shorts.

Normally I’d never dream of shopping in Gap, but it was the closest place I could think of that would sell such a thing, and ended up buying not only belted cut off ‘cargo pants’, but a ribbed top, too. Fortunately none of it has any logos. I checked.

The guide book says that ‘folk village’ we’ll be visiting isn’t a theme park at all. People actually live there.

The weather hovered around 30 degrees all day again, although you’d never know it in the office, which was as cold and drafty as ever. You could feel it on the tube, though, especially when you’re hanging around for what feels like an hour (5 minutes) because of broken rails. The overground trains were no better. A stripe of red ‘delayed’ signs right across the top of the departures board kept me hanging around for 50 minutes, so I ended up cooling down in McDonalds with a Caramel McFlurry, which was small and evil and worth every calorie.
