Well, I would have written an update yesterday. I would have done a lot. If I’d got home in time. I’d arranged with Kevin that we’d go to the gym together, and left the office bang on six. I arrived at Liverpool Street to find a stripe of red ‘delayed’ signs running across the indicator board, though, and destination names beside empty slots where the platform numbers should have been.
There had been a major signal failure at Witham, apparently, and everything was running late. So late, that often they seemed to have no idea when or where things would be coming in until the last moment. For me, that last moment turned out to be half eight after I’d been sitting over a steadily cooling cup of tea for two hours, editing pages on a narrow bench.
I got home at half nine, so cut my hair, ate some food and went to bed, feeling tired and cold.
Woke up feeling far better, so set Redhat to download the latest updates while I showered, then set out for work, leaving it to download what it fancied. Came home this evening to find it had stalled shortly after I’d left, so had to start again.
Being a Thursday it was a short day, of course. I left at half four and walked through Bloomsbury to ITN. It’s getting very dark now, and it’s not nearly as pleasant a walk as it was in the summer when it was often too hot to wear more than a t-shirt.
The show went well. Ursula came in to do the news, and arrived early so we could chat before going into the studio. It’s ages since we’ve had a chance for more than a brief natter, and we’ve been on-again off-again arranging to meet for dinner one day since the end of the summer. We made a pact to go through with it before the end of November, so now I guess we’re committed.
Tonight, being halloween, is one of those nights when you can be glad if you live in a flat and the kids can’t get to your front door to spray shaving foam through your letterbox. Fortunately missed all the ‘hilarity’ of the season by being out all evening, so can breathe easy for another year - unless they do it on Saturday because they don’t have school the next day.
Feeling tired this evening. I’m glad tomorrow is the end of the week - and my last day in the office until the following Tuesday. I need the time off. My Germany trip feels like it was a long, long time ago.
