Hamleys
Last time we went to Hamleys Emilie wowed us all by jumping out from behind one of the shelves dressed head to toe as an owl, with big brown feathers streaking up from the mask on her face, and a silky brown cape wrapped around her shoulders.
It must have been a popular choice as when we returned today, seven months later, for another lunchtime of dressing up and trying on silly hats in front of the star-shaped mirrors the mask had sold out and only the cape was left on display.
In its place were birthday-cake shaped hats, complete with candles, and a magnificent wide-brimmed purple velvet creation that stuck out from my head a foot in all directions. My office hat is starting to look a bit battered, and it would have been a great addition to our dressing up collection, but I left it where I found it, and we all came back empty handed.
Being so close to Hamleys is one of the good things about working in the west end, though. Ignore the fact it’s full of screaming kids, and no matter how grey the day, or how grim a morning you’ve had, you only need to run up to the third floor for half an hour of dressing up to feel good again.
Nonetheless, I was vaguely shocked to discover that two warty old women in head scarves in there with us genuinely were warty old women in head scarves, and not another couple of writers cheering themselves up in east European pensioner outfits.

That sure brought a smile to my face! Where are the pictures of you in the purple velvet creation? Inquiring minds want to know…
