It was very strange walking into the office knowing that I really was at the controls this time around. At least for a while, anyway. Although I’ve been making a lot of the decisions over the direction of the magazine for the last year there has always been someone to refer to to if need be. Today and until a new editor is appointed, whether it is me or not, I guess it’s kind of my mag. I called a team meeting first thing so we could talk about where we were. We’re heading for an ugly knot of deadlines at a worrying rate.
The morning went by pretty busily until about lunchtime when I got a call from the people publishing my book. They’re putting together an almanac and wanted to know if I could write ten pages by the beginning of November. I said yes, in principle, and they’re emailing me a proposal tomorrow. The more books I can do, the better, I reckon. I have a few back-burner ideas at the moment that I suppose I ought to put down as proper proposals.
I’ve just typed my name into Amazon to see if I come up as one of the many ‘not yet published’. I don’t, and neither does the book, although I’m sure it used to.
How vein am I?
It seems that my pre-holiday interfering with the staffing spreadsheet (removing my birthday) didn’t work. Janet is very efficient and she noticed it before I left, so mid-afternoon everyone crowded round my desk to embarass me with a card and a very generous voucher. Really very touching, and only the second card I’ve had in over four years there.
We all went for a drink after work. Not to mark the occasion - just to get out of the office.
The self-sufficiency pasta is holding up well, and was much better with parmesan today. I still went to M&S for a fruit drink, but that’s allowed because they count as one of your five recommended pieces a day and I’m not eating enough at the moment, which probably explains how I got this cold.
