My working day started at 7am with a call from ITN. After last night’s train debacle I could have done with a lie in, but that didn’t stop my phone chirp chirp chirping and waking me up. I didn’t get the name of the guy on the other end. He was some newsreader or other, wanting an interview in five minutes time. I bought myself ten and crawled out of bed then stood for a while, waiting for the call on the ISDN as my head slowly cleared.
I thought it went pretty well, considering I was sitting there naked, half asleep and poorly prepared. It went out on the hour every hour, I think, and although I wasn’t particularly listening out for it I did come across it by chance on a lunchtime bulletin. I’d spent the morning listening to Island FM all the way over in Guernsey, and hadn’t expected they’d be using it but there I was, blathering away, sounding rather tired.
Anyhow, it can’t have been so bad - LBC heard it and called while we were all out having a team-wide pizza-guzzling lunch, and called again when we got back to the office. ‘Can you do us a piece on it in ten minutes?’ they asked, and I readily agreed - I knew the story already, and was eager to prove that I could sound awake today after all.
They used it on Nightly News this evening.
About the time it was scheduled for going out, I was walking home, checking the voicemails on my mobile.
‘Hi Nik,’ spoke the voice on the first one. ‘It’s [Channel] Five [TV] news here. Just wondering if you could do a quick interview for us. Call me. Ciao.’
Almost eight hours late, I called him back. We agreed to postpone til tomorrow.

Nik, what was the article about that kept you busy today? I didn’t hear it but assume it was this new email virus scare?

Yup - it was the virus thing. It shouldn’t really hit hard for the next four days, but I guess the TV and radio people are all getting ready for the big event. Personally, I think it’s going to all turn out to be somewhat blown out of proportion.

The virus has hit here big time. Every other computer down at the university is infected and everyone else is doing frantic virus searching and putting up firewalls and whatnot.
