Met Tim D from PC Pro in Mildreds at lunchtime for a very interesting chat about a potential writing project. His sister suggested two writers get together and write a book in alternate chapters. I’m pretty sure it’s been done before, but it is a good idea. The only worry is being able to do enough words to meet your side of the bargain by the agreed date to keep up your half of the bargain. We were working on the assumption that we could manage 2,000 words each every fortnight but then worked out that that would mean we had to write our 2,000 words in no more than a week so that we didn’t hold up the next chapter. We sat on the wet grass in Soho Square and thought about storylines, and came up with some interesting ideas but can’t help thinking I really ought to be concentrating on the book I’ve been procrastinating over for the past four years when I’ve finished the one that’s due in 11 days’ time, and finally get it done. Suddenly that deadline is worryingly close.

The office was dead quiet. People on holidays, or letting in workmen, so most of the time it was just me on the editorial desks, and not all that many over on production, either. Still, it meant I got a lot done, and made a good start on the pages for the awards issue, which took longer than I thought they would.

Confirmed I was available to do two parts of a sci-fi radio play I’ve been asked to do. ‘The Announcer’ should be easy enough - I can just be me on radio, but the ‘psychopathic cataract remover’ sounds like it might require inventive voices and that’s not my strong point. In fact, acting’s not my strong point, and I’m starting to wonder why I said yes. The recording is on 2nd September, so I’ll have to make sure I’m not late getting back from the airport.

Left the office late and forgot to print out Monday’s invitation to the 10th birthday of Paintshop Pro on the Thames so I’ll have to get in early on Monday and check where it is. I can’t believe it starts too early if it’s an all-day do so I should be OK.
