Summer went by so quickly I barely noticed it passing. I’m determined not to let autumn do the same. Before we know it, it’ll be winter. The trees will be bare and the ground will be either rock hard or wet and muddy. It will get dark in the middle of the afternoon and all I’ll want to do at the weekend it huddle up inside with a hot mug of tea.
So, this afternoon I set out with the camera and took it up to the woods of Galleywood to take pictures of the start of the season. Many of the trees are still green, but most are at least touched by gold, if not already half way there.
It was beautiful in the woods. There were still plenty of leaves to leave areas of dark shadow that contrasted sharply with the brilliant sunshine, and where the sun poked in through the trees it got caught in the hundreds of strands of cobweb strung out between the trees. It was as though the whole wood had been filled with delicate, fragile, almost magical decorations.
The deeper I got, and the closer to the river, the deeper the ground dropped until, almost at the bottom of the hill, I came across the most beautiful toadstool, the size of a dinner plate and as red as scarlet paint.

I took close to 100 pictures, including a couple of panoramas, and stayed out until the clouds came over the sun.
At home, my freezer was busy defrosting itself. It’s been on my list of jobs for weeks but I’ve never had enough time to do it. So, I returned to find a puddle of icy water that needed mopping up and, that done, sat down with a cup of tea to blitz my PC. Another job I’ve had on the list for the last several weeks is to finally (properly) make the switch from Windows to Linux.
All in all, it’s gone rather well. I’m running SuSE Professional 7.3, which I’ll upgrade to 8.0 as soon as the download is available and have my printer and sound card fully configured. I’m also online with email and web access, have StarOffice 6 taking care of my main applications and have even managed to migrate all my messaging contacts from Trillian into Everybuddy.
Of course, all this means I’m feeling very smug with myself, which usually means something nasty is going to go wrong.
Told Gordon about it. He’s giving it two weeks until I’ve blitzed the drive and reinstalled Windows XP. Nice to see he has faith in me ![]()
