It’s sod’s law, really. I was going to cut my hair last night and decided against it, then got asked to do a TV interview this evening. It always happens that way.
Anyhow, it was a live insert into London Tonight from an internet cafe in Holborn, which being fairly close to the office sounded eminently doable. I said yes and at the appointed time was driven over there in a very plush leather-seated car, which hung around outside while it was going on to take me on the rest of my journey ‘as directed’ once it was over. I think the driver was quite disappointed that I only wanted taking as far as the station.
I’ve never done live stuff where you can’t see the presenter before, so it all felt a bit detached sitting there in front of the camera with the earpiece my only connection to the studio. I’d never realised they were such bad quality. It was like eavesdropping on a dodgy phone call. The other gawkers in the cafe sat around staring, but were peripheral enough to be easily ignored.
On the whole, it went well, I think. Three fairly simple questions which, apart from forgetting the word ‘firewall’, I got through easily enough. The producery types seemed happy enough with it, and took my card as I left, saying they’d use me again, which is always a good sign, and less than a minute after being on air I was safely back in the comfy car being driven east.
I didn’t go straight home - I popped around to Mark’s for dinner, and for four hours of chatting. We always talk far too late into the night. I was on the cusp of leaving when he dragged me upstairs to listen to this year’s Eurovision entries.
Ukraine, Belgium, Russia, Finland and Lithuania are my favourites - in that order. Of course, there is a chance not all of them will qualify, as some will not make it past the qualifying rounds this time around. There are loads hoping to take part - 33, including some naff newcomers like Andorra and Albania.
Malta seems to have sabotaged its chances once again. If they don’t want to win, why do they even take part?

Please, please tell me you hate the Icelandic song. Please.
(Although the guy who sings it is rather delicious.)
