Lunch with Neil / Dinner alone
Lunched with Neil, who I haven’t seen since Mardi Gras. It’s always fun, as we’ve known each other for years but rarely ever meet up, so there is always something new to chat about.
We first met when I was doing some guest-expert type stuff for BBC Three Counties, solving listeners computer problems on air. He was the call taker, who occasionally said things on the show, a bit like Ros in Frasier. Now he works for Wise Buddah so gets to meet lots of famous people and go to parties and concerts for free.
Am I jealous? Perhaps.
So, he popped into reception and we mooched off along Old Compton Street for soup and sandwiches in Compton Cafe. Lots of very distracting people to look at, which was just as well, as Neil’s lunch took an age to arrive, and when it did the waiter dropped half of it off the plate. He (waiter) picked it up in disgust and threw it in a bowl of soup, then wandered back to the counter to replace it.
We didn’t leave a tip, and in the end Neil paid, which was a good excuse to arrange a date next month to do it all over again so I can return the favour. This evening’s mean was somewhat less successful… for me, at least.
We had arranged to meet with the rest of Paul’s family for dinner, and so I was determined to leave the office on time to get to the White Horse (which for some reason you can buy as a tappestry) before they stopped taking orders.
Of course, it didn’t happen.
I had loads of things that needed boxing up scattered all over my desk, and as they are leaving the building first thing tomorrow morning it had to be done tonight. That made me late leaving, and it was half six by the time I walked out of the door.
I made Liverpool Street in good time, only to find a fat red stripe of delay notices running across the top of the indicator board, which kept me stuck there until 19h18, and kept me out of Chelmsford until eight. I texted my apologies and headed to Sainsbury’s to buy bits for dinner, then mooched in front of ten minutes of the Sound of Music (I needed a feelgood fix) while I calmed down.
Paul called as they left and I joined them for cake and tea at Helen and Mike’s. Excellent cake, and two cute cats, so well worth the trip.
