Lunch today with a broadband-cum-TV-cum-phone provider. At Ping Pong again where, last time, I accidentally ate three pieces of chicken and this time, rather predictably, I’d bitten into a piece of chicken before I realised what it was. Ugh.

Anyhow, as we walked in and did all the necessary hand-shaking requirements, our PR bill-payer said he and I already knew each other.

‘Do we?’ I asked.

‘Of course we do,’ he said. ‘We sat together at the PC Pro Awards last year.’

And then it dawned. We almost sat together, yes, except it never worked out that way, did it. He had brought along an extra person, who he’d not paid for. A few days earlier, he’d specifically asked to have someone from editorial sitting on his table, hence my presence, but as soon as he and his unexpected plus-1 arrived he looked at me and told me to go away and find somewhere else to sit.

So yes, we do know each other. And to be honest, I’m surprised I’d forgotten who he was.

Either way, I had such a good night sitting at the back with our own marketing and events team rather than making polite small talk on his table that night that I let it slide. He may have been very rude, but he can have had no idea quite how big a favour he’d done me.
