Poor Jess. I can’t believe it’s six months since our last trip to the vet, but this morning that day rolled around again. She worked out that something was up, of course, and spent the morning beneath a chair in mum’s conservatory. We hadn’t even got out the cat basket at that point.

Five jabs in total - practically enough for a jungle excursion.

For a change she was well behaved and nobody lost any blood.

Dropped her off back at mum’s, and stayed for breakfast on the lawn. The weather has been fantastic all day. Once we were finished and the crockery was packed away I took the camera out to Maldon, then on to Heybridge Basin to take photos of the waterfront.

By the time I got there the clouds were slowly rolling in from the horizon but there was still plenty of blue sky to be had, and even in the gentle breeze it was so hot.

I walked along a narrow path between the brambles and the enormous barges sinking and rotting in the mud while the crickets rubbed their legs, no doubt conducting some very important conversation with one another about this strange giant that was invading their territory.

Barges in Maldon

It was only when I got home and found the local paper dumped on my steps that I found out why the Maldon swimming lake was drained. The signs around it said it was a for ‘health and safety’. I assumed it was algae or weils disease. The paper, though, talks of a chemical spillage in the river. The water company has been banned from using it as a source of drinking water.

I guess the Maldon swans might not have much time left now.
