T minus one. Tomorrow I leave. And so today I emptied my drawers (so to speak) and was shocked by the amount of rubbish I’ve accumulated over the last few years. 14 pads of sticky notes. Seven rulers. About 50 pens. Three calculators. Five stopwatches. One magic trick (better than David Blaine in a box). A pack of condoms (in the office?!). Two packs of vitamin C. A box of lemsip. Three boxes of herbal teabags. A trilby hat…

The list went on and on.

Two yoyos.

It was quite sad, really. I emptied them all over my desk, packed the bits I wanted into a small box, shared out the best of the rest and binned what remained.

I deflated the globe that has hung above my desk for the last six years charting the trips of the team.

Two toy cars. One, a trabant, rolls across the floor under its own power when you pull it back and let go. The other, a James Bond Aston Martin, has an ejector seat, pop-up bullet-blocking screen for the back window and missiles that shoot out from the radiator grill.

Had a farewell curry at Masala Zone with Dylan, which was nice. Lots of advice in both directions, although to be honest most of it came from him in my direction and had a fine vintage - some of it was passed down to him from editors of long ago.

I’m going to miss this job a lot, and I find myself in the strange situation of both not wanting to leave but also being very eager to get on with the next job. I guess that’s probably not unusual.

So anyhow, with everything but the meercat and a few last bits and bobs packed away I left the office on time for the first time in a very long time, and went to the gym. Ran a long, long way then sat in the sauna feeling reflective until it got too full and chatty.

I’m going to regret it tomorrow. I’ll barely be able to walk.

My sons have got two of these. I suspect they are better than the real size things…

I liked the JB Aston Martin with the pop-up screen, ejector seat, rotating license plates and machine guns in the headlights… Corgi, wasn’t it?

Good luck settling into your new job!
