Pastry from hell

After a long run at the gym yesterday afternoon I bought pastry mix in Tesco. Big mistake. It took over an hour to get enough rolled out to cover the base of a fairly regular flan tin - it would have been quicker to start from scratch.
It got me all flustered and I forgot to cook the potatoes until just before Trevor and Jon were due to arrive. By then it was too late. I forgot to put the courgette in the quiche until it was cooked. I did twice as much cous-cous as I’d meant to, and now I have a big bowl of the stuff in my fridge.
Fortunately everyone was very nice about everything, and we had a pleasant evening sipping PR wine and playing Rummikub. Paul won almost by default because of Jon’s lousy hand in the first round. The way the scoring works, if you win you get a score made up of what’s left in the hand of every other player, while they have their scores taken off their running totals. That put Paul about 300 points ahead of the rest of us after just one hand. I guess that’s what they call unassailable.
Much of the evening was spent talking about holidays. Paul is trying to decide whether he should go to Gran Canaria with Trevor and Jon. I would do my Russia-by-train trip at the same time, but it turns out to be a bad week. They want to head off at the beginning of February when my dad is over for his birthday and will need a place to sleep.
I have no idea whether you need a visa for Russia, either, so would need to get that sorted out first and I’m guessing the beginning of February might be too soon.
We got chatting and flopped around listening to music until almost three this morning, so there was no chance of an early morning, and by the time I’d ignored the alarm, read for a bit, then done the washing up from last night it was gone lunchtime and much to late for breakfast.
I finally got around to moving this site to a much faster server. It means the address has changed a little (from nik.co.uk to digitalnik.com) as a temporary measure, but the old address still directs through to this new one. I’ll look into moving nik.co.uk to the same server so I can transfer everything back again and it will be nice and fast.
For a while I didn’t think it was going to work. The perl scripts that run the content management system were being unfriendly and refusing to talk to the configuration files and all I could get out of them were nasty error messages. In the end I trawled the troubleshooting sections of the online user guide and found out how to fix it, in the middle of which mum called to see if I fancied popping around for a cup of tea.
I said yes, so left it doing its stuff and took my pension papers with me so she could explain what they meant. I’m still no good with figures.
Couldn’t face the pub this evening after the New Year experience, and the telly was pretty lousy. UK Gold seemed to be doing a whole night of Harry Enfield programmes, which was reason enough to switch off.
