From this morning’s Metro:
“A nuclear attack by the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War would have wiped out a third of Britain’s population in a (sic) one night, according to official figures released yesterday. A secret report commissioned by the Ministry of Defence in 1954 forecast that, if war broke out with the USSR, up to 12million Britons would die when hydrogen bombs were dropped on London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow.”
