Yay for broadband! It’s up and running. Actually, it was up and running for about a day before we got it all plumbed in on account of the modem being shipped off to Paul’s old house, in spite of having this postcode on the label.
So, here I am, all zippy and fast, and rather slowly ripping all of my CDs onto a Mac that’s going to act as a general server for all of our stuff, and feed music around the in-house entertainment thingie. I’m about half way through my collection and it’s up to 7.3 days of back-to-back playing time, which is rather paltry, all things considered - especially as we were looking through some of the public libraries at work and one person had over 21 days of playtime in theirs.
I’m a bit disappointed to find that it takes half an hour to walk to the station when it only takes four minutes in the car. Half an hour is five minutes longer than it used to take from the flat. The walk is much nicer, though, as it’s down along one bank of the river, through a small park and then along the edge of some alotments, and on the way you pass a big old conker tree. I picked up 20 of them for a match - MacUser vs PC Pro - but there were so many people either off ill or on holiday today that they’re all still sat on my desk, slowly starting to shrivel.
The bus service is excellent, though. I don’t think I’ve waited for longer than five minutes for one yet, which is more than can be said for the one every hour or so we used to get until 19h11 and then no more until the next morning.
So, on first impressions this seems to be a very ncie place to live. The only trouble is, I have to finish up emptying out the flat and getting it ready for renting, which is going to be a tedious and thankless task. Just thinking about it is depressing enough, as it’s in that awful half-moved-out stage at the moment, where every floor and every surface is covered in stuff that’s either being kept or junked.
A six-year clean-out is a good idea, I am sure of it. I just don’t think I’ll really appreciate it until it’s over.

Conkers - I am told you must boil them in water and vinegar to get them really hard…
