I’m getting better at getting up early on Sunday mornings. Admittedly this morning was seven, not six like last week, but with the extra hour the changing clocks gave us last week it actually worked out the same.

Of course, it necessitated a very large coffee as soon as I arrived at ITN, which I drank while reading up on Sir John Mortimer, who wrote the Rumpole of the Bailey books. For someone approaching his eighties he is so full of life - a real inspiration. He’s overseen the debate over what should be on the vacant fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square, written dozens of books, adapted screenplays, written radio plays and still speaks out on political issues. He was also lovely to talk to. I asked him what he still wanted to do in life and he said he wanted to write a good book. I hope I could be as modest as he is if I ever achieve what he has done.

Gave away tickets to see him talk at the National Theatre, and did an extended gig guide, with Chris in a phone box overlooking Lake Ullswater. What a surreal place to do a radio interview

I’d taken my camera in again. More and more I find myself traveling with a pocket snapper, in case anything catches my eye. Walking the same streets day in day out, you tend to be blind to what you pass, though, so today made an effort to take a picture of the Zeppelin sign on a building just outside Farringdon station. It’s always appealed.

Sign marking the destruction of this building by a Zeppelin raid during the First World War

That’s actually a colour picture, but the sign is so stark it would look just the same in black and white. Also, on the train home, every station between Liverpool Street and Chelmsford, the two ends not included. I can never remember what order they come in - perhaps this will help.
