Talking to the animals

Mum had left food in the fridge for us last night so we ate that and started watching Johnny Mnemonic but it soon became clear why TV Times had only given it a one-star rating. The lights came on in next door’s garden so we ran upstairs to watch three fat badgers eating food on the lawn, then came back down again and watched Species on ITV.
It’s really nice there in the summer. Woke up to the sound of birds singing through the open window, which you don’t get in the town, and then had breakfast on the lower patio with ladybirds on the table (yuck) and insects singing in the long grass of the meadow. There was a viper (I looked it up in Encarta) on the tree stump that marks the back boundary of the patio, sheltering from the sun under a pot that had been propped up on stones to drain.
I could have happily stayed there all day, sitting in the garden in the sun listening to the animals and the cat jumping backwards and forwards over the fence, never quite sure where she wanted to be, but we both had things to do. Paul has a garden that needed mowing, and I had to get on with writing some more of the book, so we headed back into Chelmsford by way of Sainsburys, after which I let myself get even more delayed by doing washing and washing up.
When I got down to it, I did get a whole section written, which is good. I reckon I’m somewhere between a third and a half done now, as far as the actual writing goes. I still have to edit everything, do the screen shots and check that it can be followed by someone with minimal experience, but it feels better to have something decent down on paper (or disk).
Over to Paul’s in the evening for stir fry and TV, feeling that I really ought to have carried on with the writing.
