I spent last night doing secret work for the government.
That’s a James Bond way of saying I did my tax return. It took far longer than I’d thought it would. The blurb on the back of the software box promised it would all be done in half an hour, which I thought was a bit optimistic, so I put two hours aside.
In the end it took three and a half - a bit more than last year- and I finally crawled into bed at half one this morning, the flat hidden somewhere beneath a carpet of invoices, bills and statements.
Still, it’s out of my hands now. Next week it can go off to my accountant so he can check my numbers and make all the inevitable corrections then dispatch it to wherever it needs to go.
It feels good to not have it hanging over me any more and know that I can give a knowing smile to anyone who still has it left to do, then head off out for something more fun while they sit at home and calculate.
