A rather fun show this evening, I think, and in a horribly geeky way I got all excited about interviewing Professor Kevin Warwick, the guy who has a habit of filling himself with microchips. He was on to plug a new magazine that is cover-mounting bits of a robot. After 16 issues you’ll have an electronic pet. That was less interesting than the stuff about him having a new chip in his arm that should let him communicate telepathically with his wife, and he said he’d come back on the show in a couple of months when he’s had it done. In the meantime, I warned him not to go near any microwave ovens. A trip to Curry’s must be fraught with danger.

I felt rather ill this morning. Stressed and tired, I think. Fortunately I recorded the breakfast show trail so I could play it back when we’d finished, and in all honesty I think it’s the best one I’ve done so far. I talked about the new range of ebooks Penguin is launching, which is something we’ve covered before, but it’s the first time such a big publisher has pitched in. I scribbled down some of Sandy Waugh’s questions, too, so I could recycle them this evening.

Not a bad day at the office. I took plenty of Natracalm and Rescue Remedy and had a rather spaced out morning. Very productive, though - I had to get everything done before going off tomorrow. Lots of friendliness from the PC Mag types, too, who keep on asking me whether I’m going to be the next editor when Riyad’s gone and wishing me luck. It’s all very strange.

I went to M&S for lunch with Mark and found the healthy salads that had disappeared a few months ago. I had assumed they’d been phased out in favour of mayonnaise sandwiches, but they were actually hiding round the corner by the fruit, so bought couscous and an apple (”Pink Lady” - so camp I couldn’t resist) and felt righteous about being all healthy. That lasted until about mid-afternoon when I had a packet of tomato sauce crisps from the vending machine.

Mark wore the Pink Lady label from my apple all afternoon. Strange boy.

More travelling problems this evening. This country is turning into a third-world nation where public transport is concerned. From Chancery Lane tube you can see Holborn station through the tunnel and as engineer Steve and I stood there after the end of the show we could see the train stopped at Holborn going nowhere. For ages. In the end we gave up and got the bus. I told Steve about the woman sitting on the tracks in front of the train last night and he said she’s done it before. She held him up three weeks ago.
