See these brown jeans? Same ones as yesterday, you see.

How lovely it is to be able to go out for the night and not come home smelling of second-hand smoke. The ban came into force on Sunday, bringing England into line with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and outlawing smoking in enclosed public spaces (and on train platforms, which is an unexpected bonus).

Wednesday night - Ruth’s leaving do - was the first time I’d been to a pub since it kicked in, and it was lovely. Apart from the chit-chat and banter with past members of the MacUser team, it was an indoor night of clean, fresh air from beginning to end.

And then last night, out with the ladies, to the Long Bar (too briefly), Nordic Bar and then dinner at Zizzi’s. No being asked whether or not you wanted a smoking table, no being perched on the edge of the smoking/non-smoking divide, so clouded by nicotine fumes that you may as well have sat with the heaviest chain-smoker in the house.

Pubs are suddenly a much nicer place to be; a truism for which I’ll be particularly grateful when winter comes around again, and it’s too cold to be standing around outside.
