The writing on the wall

I discovered tonight that there is something quite satisfying about writing on walls. Particularly in pencil.
The bathroom should have disappeared by this time tomorrow night as the great renovation continues. With any luck there will be new carpets in four rooms, the lounge will have been dug up to replace the gas piping and the dining room will be ready to accept a batch of long-delayed furniture on Thursday.
So, in the last few days before the house is totally pulled apart mum and I have been going around with Post-It notes, sticking them on anything that needs a change or a job doing. Except in the case of the bathroom. As the tiles will all be covered over with new white porcelain squares by the end of next week we’ve taken to writing directly on the walls.
It feels naughty, and as such quite wonderful as the pencil quickly wears itself down on the slightly rough surface and leaves the thickest, blackest, most gratifying marks in its wake.
