Guests for this week’s show are popping up all over the place. It’s going to be a Windows XP special, on account of the fact it launches on the same day, and Microsoft’s PR people have done a fantastic job of getting in touch with all the launch partners and telling them about the show. Eight definate offers came in today alone, which is more than we can take on one show, so perhaps a few can be encouraged to appear on a later show instead.
I got a rather strange reply to the angry email I sent to my (book) publisher in which, from what I can work out, she seems to think that the reason I am annoyed about things is that I have not yet signed my contract (one of her obsessions) so have not yet been paid. This is, of course, a long way from the truth, although to be honest one of the reasons I have not had time to go through the amended contract is because of all of the book changes she’s been asking me to do since it arrived. I will have a think for a couple of days about what I’ll say in response before writing it, but to imply that asking me to read over and check the proofs of the book was not meant to imply I should point out any mistakes and that by doing so I have only made more work for myself is naive.
I’d had great trouble getting out of bed this morning, so left work bang on six and took proofs home with me so I could go to the gym. It was very busy - nothing like Friday evenings when it’s practically empty, and both Nigel and Andrew from the Army and Navy were there. We nodded across the running machines but didn’t speak. It’s months since I’ve been to the pub, so I haven’t seen either of them in ages.
I went to Tesco on the way home to stock up the freezer, and then drove back across the flooded flood plain as News Direct gave severe weather warnings for Essex and talked about floods in place and more to come. It looks like we’re going to have a repeat of the floods we had this time last year, which has to make you wonder who would want to buy all the new apartments they’re building right beside the canal. I’m glad my flat is on the first floor… and up a hill.
