Writing

I’ve spent almost the whole day working on the book. Research, rather than writing, but I’ve made a lot of good progress and things are slotting into place very nicely.
The more I research the back story, though, the more that feels like a story of its own, and the whole thing is starting to feel like two distinct storylines; the present-day section that has already been written, and the bits that came before, which I’m piecing together right now. It almost feels like it should be a two-volume piece, but that would probably be terribly indulgent, and I think I ought to work on getting just one volume written before having any such grand plans.
Besides, who ever writes two-parters? It’s singles or trillogies, isn’t it?
I have been reading some bits of what I more or less put on hold two years ago, and some of its is quite flabby and easy to cut. No wonder it got to 114,000 words. I certainly wouldn’t have chosen to have taken such a long break from working on it, but you get very little time for personal writing outside of editing a magazine, and I think it has probably been beneficial anyway; it has given me a new perspective on the work and let me look at it dispassionately, almost like I was editing someone else’s freelance submission.
And that will probably make it a much better book as a result. I hope.
