Tube strike

Well, it looks like the latest tube strike has kicked in (see BBC News), so getting to work tomorrow morning is going to mean a long walk from Liverpool Street to the office.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who is sick of the unions. We had strikes last summer and they got their way. Now that ‘their way’ is being implemented, they decide they don’t like it after all, so they’re striking again. That’s despite getting 10 weeks of holiday every year, and having to work only 35 hours a week.
Well, to be honest, much as it would make for a miserable winter, I’d gladly put up with this for months on end if it brought down the union. If London Underground gives in this time it won’t solve anything; it’ll just put off the next strike for another few months, and then they’ll find something else to complain about.
What really galls me, though, is all this talk of ’safety’. They harp on about how they strike for the benefit of the passengers, because running the network any other way would be dangerous for us. Well if that’s true, I’ve got a better idea…
How about we - the passengers - are balloted for strike action. Let us, who are the ones in danger, decide whether or not we’d like you to go on strike for our supposed benefit. If we vote against it, you don’t strike. Simple as that.
Or, perhaps better, if it’s unsafe we’ll strike instead, by simply not riding the tube.
We’re not kids, you know. Let us make up our own minds, rather than having a vital service taken away from us because of your petty stupidity.
