Eurovision semi final

What a disaster at tonight’s Eurovision Semi Final. In fact, if you count the irritating BBC commentator, what a pair of disasters. Where they find him from, I have no idea, but he actually managed to make Terry Wogan sound quite good, and that’s no mean feat.
No, the real disaster, of course, was the Netherlands qualifying. It’s the only song I scored as low as Switzerland which, through luck, fluke or divine intervention, received precisely the number of points it deserved: a big fat zero.
The Netherlands, though. Honestly, how did that happen. Even Malta was better, and considering what a dirge that is (my second least favourite and unfortunately another one to qualify) it’s a shocking inclusion.
Actually, I have a sneaking suspicion it’s the result of block voting: all that Maltese voted for the Netherlands and vice versa.
Of course, having complained so much about the quality of the Maltese entry it’s now all but certain it’ll be my allocated country for taking along a themed dish to Saturday night’s party. If that is how things pan out, I’ll be taking Maltesers, as I refuse to go to the effort of baking a Maltese cake if they can’t go to the effort of baking a half-decent song.
Anyhow, Ukraine got through, so it wasn’t all bad news. It’s the best song in the whole contest, so if it doesn’t win on Saturday I’ll be demanding a recount.

I *heart* Terry Wogan! He is so very funny - is he out then? When we had BBC Prime we always watched Eurovision on that channel and laughed ourselves silly in between the songs. Those were the days…
Have to agree with you on the Maltese song. It is not just bad to the point of awful, it is also quite ridiculous. And the Ukrainian song is really, really good. Love their outfits as well.

Oh c’mon, you don’t really believe quality has anything to do with this do you?

Hey, Terry’s the best! The only shame is that they’ve stopped him drinking quite so much! When the show was in Denmark a few years ago he was totally hammered before it even got started which is why he laid into Doctor Death so much. Bring on Terry, and bring on the drinks trolley!

Unfortunately, Kristin, Terry will be back on Saturday. Anyway, Eurovision is far better if you put the telly on for the pictures, but listen to the songs on Radio 2. That way you get Ken Bruce doing the commentary, and you get better sound (unless of course you have snazzy surround-sound system, which I don’t).
Oh, and of course, it should always be watched with friends. Preferably at their house.

Oh, I was in a Eurovision party in Copenhagen that time, Geoff, staying with my friend Sif. We watched the contest on BBC Prime. Doctor Death and the Toothfairy - his best performance ever, absolutely wonderful stuff.
