It soon became clear we were watching the lesser-known Sky Plus special edition of Brad Pitt epic Troy.

Troy?

Actually, we were watching the real thing; the EPG was just horribly confused. It was a disappointment, though. I think this is the post-Lord of the Rings syndrome, where everything is compared to the defining trilogy of modern-day CGI film-making. In fairness, though, it’s so long since I last saw those films that they could already look horribly dated and unrealistic.

The trouble with Troy, though, was Brad Pitt, who played Achilles as though he was unbearably bored. He plodded through his lines with a disappointingly even demeanour, barely bringing his character to life. Orlando Bloom, too, was utterly unconvincing as Paris, the man whose love for Helen was the spark that ignited the war between the city of Troy and the rest of united Greece.

A lacklustre effort. Two out of five overall.
