MPs are debating whether they should move the capital away from London and up to Liverpool, according to the Evening Standard. There’s no chance it will happen, and the piece admits that itself, so obviously the MPs have nothing better to debate - like, ummm… war with Iraq, for example.

Hmmm…

I say why not, though? Amsterdam isn’t the capital of the Netherlands, after all, and it still does OK. Let’s get the MPs out of cosy London and give more power to the regions. Get London a bit less clogged up and give the tourists a reason to venture north.

Better still - why not just move it to Brussels, and do the same with all the other regional capitals in Europe.

And then we can turn the Houses of Parliament into a massive bowling alley.

I guess what I should have said was that Amsterdam isn’t the seat of government of the Netherlands… which kind of makes you wonder how the term Capital is defined. If it’s not the seat of government, is it simply the largest city, in which case why isn’t New York the capital of the US?

Perhaps it’s something to do with the money-making centre. Capital = money, after all.
