The Guardian is reporting on a story in the Sun that Daniel Craig has been picked as the new Bond.
Hmmm… Well, at least it’s not Clive Owen, who apparently turned it down because it would have limited his career. Isn’t it time to stop making them, though? They’ve done 20 and they’ve lasted 40 years. That’s an excellent run for any series, but lately they’ve just become so noisy and shallow and there is very little character development. Not that there ever was all that much.
Roger Moore may have been criticised for doing all his acting through a single eyebrow, but at least the scripts were robust and have stood the test of time. Back then they were about true megalomaniacs and the havoc they could wreak on the world. They need to dump all the computer effects, too. The last film was all but ruined by the parasurfing debacle, and the footage of the disintegrating Jumbo. Very soon, as technology moves on and effects get more and more realistic, these poor efforts will look embarrassingly primitive. Just look at Titanic. Impressive at the time but now… it just looks so boxy.
So, Daniel Craig, congratulations. I hope you enjoy the role. But please, please, let this be the last Bond and don’t spoil the achievements of the first half of the series’ 40 year run.
Update: Seems the ‘Bond people’ are keeping quiet about the stories. As the BBC News site reports they are refusing to comment until the director of the next film can start working with them. If it’s not Daniel Craig I wouldn’t be entirely surprised. It wouldn’t necessarily be bad for his career if someone put around a story that he was up for the role, even if he wasn’t.
