I don’t know what the government thinks it’s going to achieve with this idea of charging you for every mile you drive. Nice idea… if you can get it to work. It’s set to replace road and fuel duty, so for me it woudl be great: I have driven my car three times this week, which more or less doubles the total number of times I have had it out on the road in the last month.
But there are problems. First, and perhaps most obviously, it will surely be far easier to fiddle the system when your tax is determined by something in your car that says how far you have driven (or identifies you to a satellite which can do the same thing). By taxing at the pump, nobody can evade payment. I can’t believe it would take long for someone to find out a way to disable the in-car gadget.
