Wake up at our house these days and one of the first things you’ll hear is clap-clap-clap.
It’s the sound of wood on wood; a lid clapping down as the squirrels eat breakfast on their favoured tree half way down the garden. We put up a proper squirrel feeder in the summer, to stop them from raiding the birds’ fat-balls, and it proved such a success that we added a second at the end of the year. Yet, despite there being a family of six or so of the little tree-climbing rodents frequenting the garden on a daily basis, today was the first day I’d seen them relaxing their territorial tendencies sufficiently for two to eat at once.

In fact, at one point there were three squigs on the tree at once, but that’s one too many for the feeders, and so the tardy interloper was quickly chased off to higher ground.

Sorry about the grainy pictures - these were taken in the half-light.
